Family first + a return to TV

In what is no surprise to those of us who have followed Cillian's career for years, Cillian recently revealed to the press that his family comes first before his career. Always considering himself to be European, Cillian refuses to fall prey to the lure of Los Angeles and most blockbuster films, rather selectively choosing roles in high quality indie films that keep him close to his home base in London. You can read the rest of RTÉ ten's article here.

Along these lines, Cillian has signed on to play a ruthless gangster in a BBC2 television mini-series entitled Peaky Blinders. Booked as a period gangster drama, Cillian will be playing Tommy, the most ruthless brother in a family of gangsters. The drama is set in the slum neighborhoods of England in the year 1919, and is being written by Steven Knight who recently penned such TV shows as Eastern Promises and Dirty Pretty Things. Let's just hope that those of us in the states will get to view Cillian's leading turn in this series.

Thanks for the info, Bev!

This design is wicked! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!| click through the up coming webpage http://dlkfsldkflksdlk.com

Los Angeles

As a Los Angeles native, I am a bit offended at the wording "the lure of Los Angeles" as if we're all a bunch of soulless, party monsters out to snatch fame & fortune at any cost. :P
Los Angeles is an entire county, mostly comprised of quiet suburbs, with a regular, albeit spread out city/downtown area. The majority of our residents have nothing to do with the movie business.
In his interview, Cillian simply referred to Los Angeles as a place where some friends are located; not a steaming hotpot of sin & degradation.
Trust me, I admire him for being a family man and avoiding the limelight and not giving into a "celebrity" lifestyle, the epicenter of which, unfortunately, happens to be in L.A. county (again - so few of us involved with it)
Then again - he does live in the Beverly Hills equivalent area of London, so he is a far cry from an average Joe.

As for his choice in TV - I applaud it! Keep the career fresh; he's stated again & again that his interest lies in the *roles*, not the acclaim of the titles. Lots of "big name" actors are doing TV more & more because TV has gotten better and cleverer.

Besides, I'm sure his wife doesn't complain when he has time off; it gives him an opportunity to be with their sons more, and her a chance to work on her art! Good for them for making it work for 16 years!

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only Australian obsessed with this lovely and talented man (I'm sure there must be more Aussies out there!) But fingers crossed we too here get to watch it one way or another. Oh and I couldn't careless if Cillian makes movies or t.v. as long as he's doing what he believes in and 'selling out' for the sake of a $ I'll happily watch whatever he does. :-)

In response to both Anonymous comments:

Doing television at this stage does not necessarily herald the end of Cillian's career, but neither is it a sign of health. For a successful actor in the midst of a thriving career, a television stint tends to be an activity that compliments a full slate of film commitments. That is not what is going on here; this is all Cillian has for now. Cillian has spent quite a lot of time not working, and an actor who chooses not to work is one who will eventually be unable to work. It is only a matter of time.

I disagree that Cillian's past choices have been smart ones, and it is undeniable that his most recent films have not been well received. Cillian's career peak occured in 2005; since that time, he has produced a slow trickle of films in various forms of unreleasability, or pictures that have managed to achieve theatrical release only to disappoint even Cillian's most ardent fans (Inception being a notable exception). Currently, he seems unable to attain any greater exposure in a major film than a cameo. I apologize if I offend anyone in saying that a downturn seems evident to me.

Not every artist 'makes it' in films, and it is not always a reflection of an actor's talent when he or she fails to live up to potential. There are many other traits that are required for an artist to sustain a career in film, not the least of which are ambition and a willingness to work hard. There is not a person who has ever seen Cillian perform who would deny his talent and brilliance; I do not mean to do so with my comments. But neither can I deny what is plain to me, which is that his career choices currenly appear rather limited, and that these limitations will not bode well for his future.

In response to the anonymous post, I have to say I do not agree. Some actors do television and movies throughout their career. You cannot always take sayings as facts. Cillian has made smart choices with his career in the past and just because he has chosen to do television again does not mean his career is on the downslope.

There's a saying in the business:

Actors do television on the way up... and on the way down.

After a decade in films, I don't think anyone can say that Cillian is still on the way up.

Indeed no surprise. Cillian is a man of integrity. Sorry, but correct me if I'm mistaken, but was not Eastern Promises a film? Was there also a series with the same title?
I really do hope we can watch the series here in the States. Cillian has a legion of fans here too. Please don't forget us! lol
