Just In Time for film's release: a lawsuit

Weeks before In Time, the futuristic thriller starring Cillian, Justin Timberlake, and Amanda Seyfried comes to your local multiplex, a lawsuit has been filed to halt the release. The suit was filed by Harlan Ellison, who wrote a science fiction story called "Repent, Harlequin! Said The Ticktockman" in 1965. (You can read about the short story here.) Ellison is asking for the movie to be pulled from its release date on October 28 and for all copies of it to be destroyed. This would not be great news for Cillian fans, though such suits usually end in settlements rather than heaps of burning celluloid. You can read more about the lawsuit here. Keep checking The CillianSite for the latest information!

I watched In Time on last friday..and what in my mind all the time after that was, who was the Time keeper? I couldn't tell why, may be just simply say, Attraction, already attracted by Him. Then I found his information from website, Ahh...Cillian Murphy, an Irish...you got me. You are the second Irish I really love indeed - but you already kick away Sean Collery a large part in my heart. Cillian is such an Art Creature, just a simple motion, a blink, a light smile....help....you already suck away my soul. I am preparing to watch all of his movies. But I found that most of his characters were minor actor. WHY?

First off..as a freelance writer, on Ellisons reasons behind the suit... I have to say.." I see where (insert caughs covering laughter) he's coming from."
- A LETTER TO MR. ELLISON-
Dear Mr. Ellison,
I say... where is your actual proof?" Where is the proof that this film (In Time) is based on your exact story.
Yes, both plots use "Time" for everything. Yet, like you Mr.Ellison .. I have not seen the film.. so I can not declare that they use "Time" for when a character is late to anything. That's in your book... right?
Whoa...wait a second...I just realized what i just stated... you haven't seen the film...and you have a lawsuit against them...saying they have made the film based on your book... but you have not seen the film?
Well.... Mr. Ellison...let me commend you on your bravery to take them on without full evidence of your work being portrayed. Then again, we are living in a world where someone can order a hot cup of coffee from McDonalds, spill it on themselves and sue Mc Donalds and win.... so... I can see why you would take your chance. I mean... after all... in todays time, it's not like we have many films that come from the ideas of numerous books, graphic novels, songs, life in general or most of the time a combination of many of those listed above. But... I know you...and you .. are a man of research and proof. You my man... have gotten all the evidence that this is based on your book...well..minus reading the script and seeing the actual film. But hey, if you say it's enough.. it's enough.
By the way... I wanted to say how much I loved Hunter S. Thom..scratch that.. I mean your documentary "Harlan Ellison: Dreams with Sharp Teeth." Great Job... completley original... nothing like anyone else has ever done. Also... I love the Star Trek episode you wrote.. it says on their site that The teleplay is credited to Harlan Ellison (congrats..thats you my man) but was also largely rewritten by several authors before filming......Hey... what matters is that you got the credit. Oh...and South Park used the same title of that episode (The City on the Edge of Forever) for their episode (City on the Edge of Forever). Just a FYI.
But back to "In Time"..I would just like to say that...wait...OMG.. You will not believe this.. I've just been givin the information that movies and books have been released and sometimes have the same plot lines. OMG!! Whoa... they even release movies with similar plots at the same time...just look at this site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:ProhibitOnions/List_of_films_with_si milar_themes_and_release_dates What is going on here.... wait...I'm sorry Mr. Ellison...I've got to go... I've just been told there is even a song out call OMG. OM..wait...better not say that.. I could get a lawsuit against me. Will write again soon,
Harley Quinn.

Seems unlikely that Niccol would have deliberately ripped off Harlan Ellison's work, since it's so well known that Ellison likes to sue people for exactly that. I'm thinking there may have been some influence, but no way did Niccol "steal" this story. It's sad that a respected writer would push his way into the act and attempt to obstruct the film's release. And yeah, the timing is very fishy. Not to mention the fact that Ellison admits he has not even seen the movie, so to me, that disqualifies him from levelling such a charge.

WTH Harlan Ellison!!??....this movie has been in the works for HOW LONG? The only reason he brings suit now is out of some desperate need for publicity for his story that no one has ever heard of until now. Go away!

Nothing is new lately. For example I can re-watch Matrix, Inception, Black Swan and still think of the animes Ghost in the Shell, Paprika and Perfect Blue. Some ideas from the past where NEW at that time. But since we are in this technological almost future time, I think IN TIME looks perfect for it. Maybe is NOT an original story, but it can be an adaptation or an inspiration. I just hope for the best, that get's to theaters or anywhere I can watch it and enjoy it, since 7th Art is my life, and yes, is Cillian's work, which I think he deserves a respect for the hard work done (including the cast & crew plus director).
