It's a good story overall, and I appreciate Shannon sharing the experience of the play. So many of us did not get to see it and for us, it's like being there even if we weren't. But I agree with those that said that her approach of him in the park was a little pushy. Just because she didn't ask him for anything doesn't mean she wasn't being rude. She was. Cillian is known for avoiding situations where people don't respect his space; he leaves pubs if people begin to approach him too much. Seriously, wasn't the show enough? Can't someone just let him be a dad for a little while?

Just read Shannon's review of Misterman. Very thoughtful piece. Thank you for sharing it with us, Shannon!

I see there's a bit of a kerfluffle over her recounting of meeting Cillian in the park. Honestly. It all sounds perfectly respectful and civilized to me. Lucky girl getting to meet Cillian! It's not like she begged him for an autograph or a photo. He's a professional. He probably runs into fans all the time, some of whom are more likely to paw at him and make pests of themselves. Do any of you watch TMZ? Did Shannon act like a papparazzo? Was there an item in the news that day about a crazed fan attacking an actor in the park? No.

There was no sense of entitlement to her tale of the encounter. Not every fan of celebrities can say that.

Congratulations, Shannon, on what sounds like a wonderful vacation. :)

I'm sure Cillian is well used to fans approaching him to tell him how much they love his work, it's all part of his job, after all. I don't think there was anything wrong with Shannon approaching him the way she did. She wasn't disrespectful in the slightest. If he felt that threatened when he was out and about with his family, he would have a bodyguard wouldn't he? But that's not the way they do things here in Ireland.
As for pushing four teenage girls to the floor at the In Conversation interview, I was there and it wasn't like that at all, Shannon is just joking I'm sure, there was a bit of pushing as people tried to get into the hall first as there is at any show (let alone one for Cillian freakin' Murphy!) but no one got pushed to the floor or hurt in any way.

I'm with you John. I think Shannon's comment was more tongue in cheek about her Grandmother and poetic license to express how excited they were. As for Cilly in the park. Its one thing to say how restrained you'd be, and then there is reality. I dare say if I had traveled to Ireland and this was my one chance in a lifetime to say hello and how much I loved his work, I don't think I would have had much restraint either. When I lived in NYC, I saw horribly intrusive celebrity encounters (one of which ended with a fist in a face). Shannon's encounter certainly did not rise to that.

If I ever become a celebrity....and Im already a household name in my own household.......please free to walk up to me and say hi..........its unlikely I will be carrying my sons (they are 27 and 25) but I might have a grandchild or two with me. But feel free to say hi. ;)

Yes, and I still firmly believe that whatever Shannon's mother did to those four girls was unfunny. Shoving anyone aside just to get to a seat is uncalled for, no matter who you or your victims are. I was just thrown off by the way Shannon put the smiley face after the sentence. The imagery of four young girls just minding their own business, then all of a sudden being forcefully pushed to the ground and possibly hurt by a complete stranger does not amuse me. I fully well know that even just being knocked into by some careless person passing by can be extremely annoying, now imagine how it must feel to be hit by a force so powerful it sends you and three of your friends to the ground. Again, I desperately hope that Shannon is exaggerating. I also hope that her mother apologized to them, and Shannon left that little detail out.

Plus, just imagine this: you are spending the day with your child, showing him a festival. He sits on your shoulders, which adds a lot of weight and can make maneuvering somewhat of a hassle--so if there was ever an emergency, if you had to break into a run or anything, it would be difficult; you'd have to take the extra time to remove the child. So, you're already in a slightly awkward position; both you and the kid are vulnerable.
You're just standing there, kid on your shoulders, just trying to enjoy your day. Then, all of sudden, you're aware that a person is directly beside you. With the kid on your shoulders, you can't see them, but they softly say your name right into your ear--and the voice is unfamiliar. A complete stranger is in your personal space, whispering your name RIGHT into your ear. While Cillian is a perfectly nice man, I imagine that just for a split second, alarm bells went off in his head. Even without the kid, the situation would be slightly odd. What's even stranger is JUST before detailing that exchange, Shannon said she didn't want to be intrusive. She's not a horrible person or anything. She could take this as just a friendly reminder/warning that next time she meets Cillian or any other celebrity, she should be a tad more thoughtful. Stepping out in front of Cillian while being a good couple feet away would have been more appropriate, I think.

It's not that Cillian is better than any of us. It's that coming up behind a stranger (and yes, he is a stranger to her), and whispering in his ear is intrusive and rude, even if only fleetingly so. She didn't commit a crime, no, but I would bet anything that Cillian didn't like it and was annoyed with it.

Just not a big fan of behavior that smacks of lack ot restraint. Just because Cillian is Irish and that the celeb culture there is more relaxed doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the same respect anyone should have.

Thank you for your wonderful comment, John! Especially for your insight into the beautiful Irish culture. And what I wouldn't give to have been there myself! =)

I loved this story which was beautifully written. And I clicked on the comments but Im kinda disappointed in them. Shannon has shared her story and really deserves better than the comments she got for so doing.
I actually live in Ireland and the wonderful thing about Shannons story is that she "got" us....who we really are. Flawed and all.
We are very relaxed about "celebrity culture". Our attitude is that nobody is above or below us and Cillian Im sure feels that as much as I do. Its as much part of his DNA as it part of mine. We dont put our celebs on pedestals and would soon remove the pedestal if any celeb thought he was good enough to be on one.
Shannon called it just right. Anybody in the public eye does ...politician, actor, whatever does not mind praise. And subtle, quiet dignified praise like Shannon in the park is bound to have made Cillian feel good about himself.
And thats what we should be doing in life..making each other feel good. Its not that hard.
And actually a 71 year old lady shoving four teens (and I think theres some artistic licence there) IS kinda funny.
Four teens shoving an old lady of 71 to the ground is a lot lot worse.
So unless Shannons mother knocked them down, stole their wallets, sent them to hospital and traumatised the teens......I suspect the four teens saw the funny side too.

Agreed; stepping in on Cillian's personal space when he's with his son is somewhat odd. Sure, it's Cillian freakin' Murphy, but surely she could have resisted the urge? He's as human as the rest of us and more than likely doesn't want to be bothered when he's spending a day with his kid. I also find it quite strange that she says "My 71 year old mother pushed four teenaged girls to the floor in order to secure the best seats in the house!" as if it's funny and cute. Um. Last time I checked, physically shoving people aside for anything as trivial as "the best seats in the house" is rude, especially when it's an adult doing it to children. I honestly hope Shannon is exaggerating when she says those young girls were on the floor.
