Cillian on E!

"The Lyons Den" on E! Online has a fun bit of Cillian fluff as part of their trivia questions feature. Watch for his put-upon sigh before explaining the origins of his first name:

Sorry, Cindy. My bad--it's not on YouTube. There are so many clips of Cillian on there, I got confused. I can give you the link to the video on E!Online:
http://www.eonline.com/videos/v55763_lyons-den-trivia-cilli an-murphy.html. It doesn't work any better for me than the clip here does. But you should be able to get the original clip from this link. Suz

Suzanne: Can you kindly provide me the link to the YouTube clip? For some reason the embedded clip on this page won't load for me. :(

Cillian on E

lol! I got the impression from that he doesn't really get why others are so interested in knowing his name origins. Probably because to him - being from Ireland - names like that are a common place thing. Bless him!

The Name Cillian
Reply #2 on : Mon September 06, 2010, 17:49:08
Hi. I've seen the E! clip on YouTube. There are a lot of Cillian clips there. I can sympathize with him, since being named "Suzanne" means having to tell many people that my name is not "Susan".
I've always been interested in the meaning of names, and I have a "Dictionary of First Names" at home. I thought you'd like to know what it says about "Cillian".
?The name Killian, or Kilian, is the name of an Irish saint who sent as a missionary to Germany in the late 17th century and was martyred at Wurzburg, where a cathedral was later built in his honor. The survival of the name into modern times may owe something to its use by Sir Walter Scott in 'Anne of Gerstein' (1829). The name is a diminutive of the Irish word meaning ?strife? and is spelled Cillian in Irish. (There is no "k" in the Irish alphabet). Keelan is another variant, and Killie (or Cillie) is used as a short form.?
I looked up strife in my Irish dictionary, but I didn't find any form of the word that resembled Cillian. Anyway, that's the by-the-book answer.
