Oh, Soldier Boy...

14 July saw the long-awaited Region 1 DVD release of The Edge of Love, the love-quadrangle World War II drama from director John Maybury. Though reviews have been generally lukewarm to negative, critics seem united in their opinion that Cillian's turn as returning warrior William Killick is one of the higher points of the film. The Sunday Business Post compares Cillian's performance in the movie to that of his co-star Matthew Rhys, and praises his subtlety:

Murphy, as the damaged soldier Killick, gives a far more interesting performance, full of bravado and wit, but the war absents him for long sections, returning him in a shell-shocked trance as a remote, jealous misfit. Pushed by his own demons into an act of desperation, Murphy brilliantly evokes the man's panic and fear but the constantly self-referencing script noticeably deflates his performance, repeatedly underlining emotions the actor is well able to communicate himself the first time.

Cillian's North American fans will be happy to have something new to add to their collections; The Edge of Love is also available on Blu-Ray DVD.
