Scarecrow flashes across the screen, reviewers skip him

The Dark Knight went into wide release in the Americas today, and the reviews for the film are overwhelmingly positive. However, Cillian's appearance is so brief and unimportant to the plot, all but a few reviewers neglected to even mention his role.

With the credits reading only "Scarecrow," it's obvious that Dr. Crane is no longer part of his character's personality—Cillian is on screen for but a few short minutes, with only a couple of glances at his face sans mask. This fleeting, early scene does, however, set up the film as to the state of Gotham since Batman Begins, where scads of fake Batmen attempt to fight criminals, the Scarecrow serving as the visual example.

When Cillian is mentioned in reviews, the consensus is that his appearance is simply a pointless cameo. The Detroit News describes the moment as "a confusing sequence in which Batman breaks up a drug deal and (apparently) captures Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy), a leftover from Begins." The Boston Globe even misinterprets Scarecrow's relationship with the false Batmen, insinuating that he's their leader, because the "unexplained" scene is so difficult to follow. New York sums up the critics' opinion perfectly with "Batman battles ... the Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy in a cameo that comes to nothing)."

Regardless of the brevity of our man's presence, The Dark Knight is definitely worth the watch.

they showed his face (cillian's) for half a second on the ferry with the inmates when the big inmate threw the thing out the window. they show cillians's face and he was dressed as a guard and looked sad and scared. i got into an argument last night about this with my friend who maintains that he was only in the beginning scene. can anybody help me verify this?

i loved Cillians small role. any more and critics would be calling it over crowded. i though it was great and his final line is one of the best! loads of laughs at that one:)

oh and for people that want to know what was up?
SPOILER

he was "renting" arkham to the mob, and the mob guy was mad that his men were getting sick from the fear toxin.

WOW! I saw DARK KNIGHT a lot of times and realy, I saw Cillian's 3 minutes scene...it was worth it. Ledger left us a brilliant Joker and the rest an explendid performance. This movie brake up all the records Spider-Man 3 made, even in 10 days got the biggest budget (300 million on 10 days), worldwide...I know is much bigger than that! Oh, but Cillian did a different Scarecrow, one I never though I could see. A expresive one, a young one, but in a mature way. When Batman took of his mask...I knew he would seem more old (32 years is a big risk, hehe). I just know his cameo is not that much talked around people but I got fate he will return for the 3rd one...I read Long Halloween and Dark Victoria (books that will be used for that 3rd movie/Final one), and Scarecrow is there, even on the story that describes Scarecrow/Crane on IMBD.com I realy know he will come back! LOVE CILLIAN MURPHY! BLESS HIM ALWAYS!

Scarecrow Role in TDK
Reply #21 on : Tue July 29, 2008, 12:45:24
While I have speculated numerous times on the reasons for Scarecrow's cameo in TDK, when I went to see the movie with my grown son, an incredible Batman fan and avocational statistician, he had an entirely different spin on it.

* * * S P O I L E R S * * *

To begin, he believes that, while unfinished business may be a part of why this scene was included, it also shows him doing "other crimes" to get the money to fund new experiments, part of the character's activities in the comics, leaving us to wonder what new experiments he was planning.

Secondly, he believes Scarecrow is now frightened of Batman as he tries to put up a brave facade. He shows this bravado as the Batmobile arrives on the scene after others' fighting with fake Batmans, and he says, "That's more like it!" (to that effect), then jumps into the truck and drives away when Batman attacks him.

Later, after he is caught, one of the fake Batmans says something to Batman about him being crazy, and Scarecrow then says, "That's wasn't my diagnosis!" While he smiles, he evidently doesn't want Batman to think this is another reason to punish him physically. True to form to the comic Scarecrow...he had been mocked as a child by peers, neglected by his mother, and abused by his grandmother...he cannot take physical or mental punishment.

Finally, my son thinks that showing these weaknesses increases the contrast between Scarecrow's and Joker's levels of psychosis. While Scarecrow can dish it out, Joker can take it, and tends to like it.

Just wanted to share another insight. Please comment with your thoughts.

Cillian Murphy's performance in Batman Begins is what made me become such a big fan of his. Though his role was not huge in Begins, it was large enough to have a very memorable impact on the audience and it is a performance that never gets old. A lot of people are complaining that his role was not big enough or wasn't neccessary in The Dark Knight, but it fit into the story well. It showed what he has been up to since Batman Begins and it was a cool entrance for Batman. It shows how much better Batman has gotten at catching criminals, and also shows what a massive threat the Joker is in comparison. I really hope Cillian will come back for the 3rd because I think he is a special talent.

No, unfortunately, he was only in the beginning scene. And no, he also wasn't working for The Joker. I wish we could have had more Scarecrow though. :\

I read the old posts. Whew! But, then, we already knew he was fabulous enough to go on about!

As for me, I adore Cillian, and don't really care what acting choices he makes, just as long as I'm privileged enough to watch him act his talented backside off (literally and figuratively)!

After all, what are the chances of my helping him make those choices? I would guess - no I know - they would be ZERO (grrrrr). %(

Thanks for the response! I feel better. :@)
