Reviews for The Edge of Love have run to extremes, but the consensus among reviewers has been about the visual beauty of the film.
DigitalSpy.co.uk's review is a good example; the film received four out of five stars for being "[b]eautifully shot and cerebrally involving."
The Hollywood Reporter calls Edge a "[w]onderfully atmospheric tale of love and war."
Shadows on the Wall gives three and a half stars out of five for "strong acting and atmospheric production design."
Cillian's performance is also often individually praised.
EdinburghGuide.com sums up the film's high points with a glowing compliment on Cillian's acting:
The entire cast deliver great performances but it's Cillian Murphy as the broodingly intense and traumatised war veteran Sergeant Killick who steals the film and lingers in the mind.
Orange gave Edge four out of five stars.
[T]his is a fine British movie that expertly conveys an impressive sense of mood, time and place, while reaping the rewards of its first-rate cast. ...[Murphy] nails both the romantic heroism of his pre-war courtship and the battle-weary disillusionment of his post-war veteran with effortless aplomb.
Yahoo! U.K. & Ireland's review says the film "recalls the times of classic high drama on film." The reviewer also felt that:
Murphy is little more than a cameo but his Killick is critical. Normally upstanding and correct, his severe experience of war and it's effects are all the more stunning.
MyMovies.net's opinion states, "The performances are engaging and heartfelt, particularly Cillian Murphy as the serious William Killick."
Unfortunately, other reviewers were not particularly impressed with the film.
FutureMovies gave the film six out of ten stars with an unenthusiastic, "Well, it's not bad, but it could really do with being better."
OK! gave it a three out of five rating, describing the film as "[a]n entertaining love-triangle drama which doesn't always convince."
Time Out London gave Edge three out of six stars for confusing writing:
Ultimately, Sharman Macdonald's screenplay is too muddled, too unfocused—is it about Thomas? is it about Vera and Caitlin? is it about Vera and William's marriage?—although [John] Maybury's cinematic invention is never less than imaginative.
Bloomberg gave it two out of four stars for lack of depth:
The Edge of Love is a succession of short scenes in which characters have to convey the intensity of their shared past and present. So much is suggested and not shown that the viewer is left with an impression of shallowness.
The Scotsman obviously hoped that the film would feature a more kindly view of Dylan Thomas as its review is titled "Portrait of the artist as a selfish moocher in the background."
The Hornsey and Crouch End Journal describes Edge as "sitting squarely in the middle of the land of boredom."
TheOneliner.com gave Edge possibly it's worst rating so far: only one out of five stars. Although the reviewer states a particular liking for Cillian, his performance is also described as uncharismatic.
