Cillian to play a Scot in White Male Heart

According to Variety, Cillian just signed on for a new indie, the provocatively titled White Male Heart. Production company Brocken Spectre's rather spoilerish synopsis reveals a storyline superficially reminiscent of Disco Pigs. Two long-time best friends, Hugh and Aaron, spend all their time together, hunting, drinking, and making trouble in their rural Scottish Highlands village, until a beautiful Londoner on holiday arrives. Hugh falls for her and begins to consider a new life, but the troubled Aaron is threatened and begins to spin out of control. The film will also star British actor Eddie Redmayne, who recently featured in The Other Boleyn Girl, but it is as yet unknown which actor is taking which role. We confess that we hope Cillian will avoid typecasting by playing Hugh, rather than Aaron, but regardless, this sounds like another well-chosen project.

Based on the novel of the same title by Scottish journalist Ruaridh Nicoll, White Male Heart will be directed by Peter Mackie Burns. Apparently, it was originally intended to come out in 2004 under a different director. This production is slated to kick off in the late summer—hmmm, what about Dalí and I: The Surreal Story?

white male heart is one of my favorite books. living in scotland isn't as picturesque as some might lead you to believe. i cant help making comparisons to Conrad's Heart of Darkness, fantastically bleak, beautifully written, stark and deeply moving. can't wait for the movie, and cillian's performance, in whichever role.

I am quite excited about this and need to quickly read the book before the film is finished. I feel compelled to inform certain posters that some people in the world understand the place for violence and ennui in films. And enjoy it. If you do not like those films, by all means avoid them. But I seriously doubt any actor is going to read a snarky comment and say to themselves "Oh my, what was I thinking, I must stop this project at once!". It's all the more sad that some people treat both real and fictional violence with the same regard and the same emotion as if it was merely a bit of crap on their shoe. Oh, no, icky!!! I am one person who will be a bit disappointed if Cillian Murphy gets the calmer role. There is not much more mesmerizing than a furious Cillian Murphy.

You're welcome Melty Girl...:)

Really, I couldn't NOT have spoken up. It was being portrayed by someone with a very narrow view of what this story is really about.

And then it became some twisted way to simply insult Cillian.

Not on my watch sister.

If someone can bring this story to the light of day it has quite alot to say. And now that I've gotten to the part of the story where Aaron is I can see Cillian bringing him to life as well. If I was Cillian it WOULD BE a tough call which part to play. This is such a rich story I'd like to see the makers have all the funding needed to bring it to the screen.

Selkie, thanks so much for offering an informed, alternate viewpoint (that also doesn't see the need to insult Cillian and regions of the world to bolster an argument).

I'm about half way thru the novel at the moment and I can't put it down. It's very well written and I can see some beautiful scenes coming out of it already-one in particular kinda funny. It's not all bleak like anonymous says. It would all have to do with how this script is written. And probably ALL to do with how much more funding they can get if Cillian stays with this.

I just can't see Cillian in any other role than Hugh tho. He'd be terribly miscast as Aaron. Hugh just feels like Cillian on the page.

And as I go thru this I'm seeing lots of reasons Cillian thought to do this one- aside from the main subject which really is jealousy of a life long friend.

That's my 2 cents at the moment... :)

Or, to put it more succinctly: There's not enough misery in your life that you have to seek it out in crap like this, Cillian? Good on ya, pal. But not on my damn dime.

Grow up, little man.

I skimmed it today. If he really is in this, I can't watch it. Sorry. If I want "bleak," "hopeless," and "horrible," I can go to work and get paid to read it.

What I guess I don't understand is why I don't feel compelled to write a book like this. See, the writer's a journalist, and I guess he's seen his share of crap, and he feels compelled to "share." Catharsis or something. I could "share" things that would make this seem like a trip to Toys "R" Us. But I guess I'm not selfish enough. I always get stuck at the "Why should I make other people suffer because I feel bad about something?" stage.

Oh, well. When you do a movie that's not vitriol for the soul, Cilly, maybe I'll check it out.

Oh, and enjoy the gnats while you're up there in manly-man Scotland. They'll be a nice followup to the ticks and mosquitoes of Iowa.

I'm picking up my copy of White Male Heart from the library tomorrow. I'm surprised the book hasn't already been snapped up by some other fangirl. Oh well...one more copy left.
