North American Detectives DVD out in August

As we reported a few weeks ago, Watching the Detectives will not be making it to North American movie theaters and instead will be going straight to DVD. Now we know the DVD release date: RottenTomatoes.com lists it as 12 August. So, if you're in the market for the region 1 DVD, you'll be able to rent or own it in the near future. (A region 2 DVD has been out in Poland for a little while now.)

Thanks to Heather for the tip!

I know, right? What a Debbie Downer...why complain all the time? No one wants to be around someone like that!

I liked The Wind that Shakes the Barley, and even though I'm easy to please I thought it was a very intelligent film. (Maybe that's why she doesn't like it! HAHA! I'm such a joker!)

I'm totally with you Melty_Girl...I didn't think your tone was snotty in the least bit. I'm wondering what films Anonymous enjoys if The Wind That Shakes the Barley, one of the best films I've ever seen, is not up to their very high standards.

I'd just like to know if Anonymous has ever had anything good to say about anything in her life.

Well, don't hold back! Sorry you felt my comment about "Watching the Detectives" was snotty. I find your remarks to be much more strongly-worded and provocative than what I said. At least I allowed for people to disagree with me.

As I've replied to you before, I'm almost in agreement with you about "Sunshine," which was gorgeous looking but very flawed. But I can't go with you on "Barley." Personally, I welcome all genres and approaches to filmmaking, lest movies be all the same and relentlessly mainstream. Loach's unique approach yielded something naturalistic and human in "Barley". I thought the film was a breath of fresh air. But "Detectives", I think, was a cliché-fest that rarely achieved its own goals, was more often awkward than genuinely funny, and lacked internal consistency. I think that, thanks to a weak script and inexperience direction, Cillian's performance would have received bad reviews and it might have hurt his chances at future everyday guy roles. But that's just my opinion.

Forgot: Loach calls it "directing." I call it "improv." There's a big, dumb, clumsy, line-missing difference between the two, Kenny. Cillian and Padraic Delaney were utterly wasted in that slopfest.

Yeah-- like they had a crack at "Sunshine." Now, that was a REAL piece of crap. Pack it in, Garland! You've got big ideas, but no sense of plotting, characterization, or dialogue. Danny Boyle: please ditch that loser. And stop shaking the camera while you're at it. Then there's the critics all treating "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" with the utmost dainty respect. Good thing that one had a bullet-proof topic at its heart. 'Cause it didn't have a script, a director who bothered to direct, or a supporting cast.

I know that many fans enjoyed "Watching the Detectives," but I have to say that I think it's best for all involved that the critics didn't get a crack at it.
