As we blogged recently, Watching the Detectives is showing this weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Desert Sun ran a brief review:

Murphy is a chameleon in an American accent, while (Lucy) Liu is genuinely funny as Violet. (Paul) Soter's script could be stronger, but in terms of character development and sense of the comedy in ordinary life, he's written a film that's a good choice to spend your 93 minutes with.

Let's hope that we start seeing some promotion for Detectives soon. Please let us know if you spot a trailer!

But Irish filmgoers still want to see Cillian and Colin get it on

Film Ireland's new issue focuses on sex in Irish cinema, including a survey covering Irish attitudes about sex in homegrown films. The results, as summed up in the Sunday Independent, are fascinating:

...actor and playwright Mark O'Halloran, who was behind the survey as guest editor of the magazine, ...said many of the respondents' comments showed that we do not believe it's possible to be both sexy and Irish. Some respondents even felt disgusted at the thought of watching Irish actors in passionate embraces. And many struggle to name even one sexy Irish female actress, sometimes claiming there are none.

O'Halloran told the Sunday Independent: "It boils down to the nation's sense of sexual inadequacy. We still have not got over it! That was a bit of a shock. When we asked for comments about whether or not there should be more action in Irish cinema, some people actually said: 'I don't want to see Irish sex.' They were very keen on foreign films and found actors from other countries very sexy. But it was as if once an actor is from Ireland, they could not have any sex appeal."

There are additional intriguing insights into the Irish psyche in the rest of the Independent article (Film Ireland only has abstracts online). On the subject of Cillian, the survey put him as #2 sexiest actor (two percentage points behind Colin Farrell). And as for favorite pairing, the results weren't a surprise to me, though the Independent seem unfamiliar with the advent of slash:

Bizarrely, when asked to list their fantasy Irish on-screen coupling, most readers voted for male on male action. Jonathan Rhys Meyers in a clinch with Colin Farrell was top fantasy, with Cillian Murphy and Colin Farrell in second place and Rhys Meyers and Murphy in third.

I don't understand what they are talking about in regard to being Irish and sexy at the same time. Huh?!! To me, an American, the two are almost indivisible...especially when it comes to Cillian Murphy. Funny how we all think actors from other countries are sexy.

I am so amped for Watching The Detectives!

I find it bizarre that Irish people don't find Irish actors & actresses sexy. Maybe I don't quite comprehend the complexities of the culture..

Ahaha that is so funny! I find that to be really interesting...it could not be further from the American viewpoint, huh?

And I am so unbelievably excited for Watching the Detectives. The clips I've seen online are hilarious and seeing Cillian in a comedic American role is certainly quite appealing as it is so different for him.
