Cillian to star opposite idol Pacino

Al Pacino & Salvador Dali
Al Pacino, Salvador Dalí

A dream is about to come true for Cillian: he just signed on to star opposite one of his biggest idols, Al Pacino. And the film in question, Dali & I: The Surreal Story, promises yet more '60s and '70s period interest for us Cillian fans, with Pacino as surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and Cillian as his disciple. The Hollywood Reporter explains:

The movie, which will span the 1960s-80s, follows the time in Dali's life when most of his great work was behind him and he became more flamboyant. Dali ... developed a mentor-protege relationship with a young art dealer named Stan Lauryssens, who will be played by Murphy. Based on Lauryssens' autobiographical book Dali and I.

Writer/director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War) will helm the film, which will be shot in Spain and New York early next year.

Cillian has long cited Pacino as one of his inspirations, often mentioning a teenage viewing of Pacino in the 1973 film Scarecrow as being the first time he realized how powerful film acting could be.

E.T.A.: I turned up Stan Lauryssens's website, and he sounds like quite the character. This crime fiction and history author says that before he met Dali in the 1980s, he was scamming his way across Europe and America selling fake art, fake diamonds and "non-existent real estate." I do wonder about his fascination with Nazi war criminals though, many of whom he has met and written about; there are photos of some of them on his site. One more note about the film: an earlier version of the Dali and I script was termed a "black comedy."

Hi Evette -- we've been in touch with Stan Lauryssens too! You can be sure we'll post more here about that and his book as we get closer to the time of the shoot.

I'd been trying all week to track down a copy of Stan Lauryssens book since I heard this wonderful news. I was so surprised yesterday to find one hadn't been published yet in english. So I wrote Stan Lauryessens and he e-mailed me back today saying sometime next year, possibly May 2008, his book is to be published in some 23 countries worldwide. Among them China, Brazil, Russia & Japan-and that St. Martin's Press in New York is negotiating for a UK, Canadian & Australian edition. He says he wrote the book in English so it won't be a translation.
The sweet part is he says "I'm as happy as you are that Cillian Murphy is going to be "me" in "Dali & I: The Surreal Story"
I guess that made this girls' day... What a lovely man...too bad it will be so long till most of us can read the story tho. I was really hoping I could curl up with Dali & I this weekend and read what Cillians up to next...

FABULOUS news! Thanks so much for the great info! As for Pacino dial it down several notches, CM will shine no matter who he is compared to! What a wonderful match!!! Now, the wait! Aaaaaah!

Here's hoping Pacino dials it down several notches so CM can shine as well (less 'Scent Of A Woman' and more 'Godfather I or II') although as Dali it gives him a perfect excuse to be wild and frantic. Lauryssen hit the jackpot with such a talented and attractive guy portraying him in film.

Yeah, it seems like Pacino as Dali could really be a case for Pacino pushing himself. I thought he was brilliant as Roy Cohn in "Angels in America."

And as for Cillian, I'm sure there will be personal feelings he can draw on when acting with Pacino as his mentor!

Cool! I love Al Pacino. His movies seem to be kind of hit or miss, but this is an interesting enough subject that I bet he'll really push himself in it. I'm trying to picture him and Cillian together - maybe I'll have to wait for the photos.

On a side note: here's a look at Sienna Miller on the set of Hippie Hippie Shake. No Cillian, but still a glimpse at the film.
