Cillian seen in Chicago, on set and off

The exciting rumors about Cillian shooting scenes for The Dark Knight in Chicago have been confirmed. The Scarecrow is definitely back! Not only did clearer photos taken by clever fans pop up on The SuperHero Hype! Boards, but Cillian was also spotted out on the town by The Chicago Sun-Times:

SEEN ON SCENE: Actor Cillian Murphy was spied checking out the "MCA Exposed" exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art—as well as picking up an airplane-shaped baby spoon and kids' book in the museum's gift shop—presumably presents for his toddler son Malachy.

Studio and actor denials notwithstanding, the evidence is overwhelming. I've added two new pages to our Fandom section so you can see all the photos—they're Cillian Encounters galleries called "Batman fans unmask The Scarecrow" and "The Dark Knight fan encounters." The latter page has a nice shot that a fanboy who calls himself Darkest Knight got with Cillian. Darkest Knight said of the encounter,

He wasn't the most chill dude I met via BEGINS (sic) production ... but he was alright. I didn't see him take pics for anyone else however ... Murphy is puny, bro...

The requisite debates about Cillian's weight and health ensued. Zip over to SHH to read fan accounts and commentary.

Liz spots Cillian on The Dark Knight set

One of the fans doing Dark Knight reconnaissance was our friend Liz. Here's her report from 22 June:

None of my pictures really came out except for the ones of the roof set, and those kind of pics are all over the web anyway. BUT, I did manage to see the man himself. It is definitely Cillian!

My friends and I were down there the whole evening, mainly sitting across the street from the set at Randolph and Wells. We snuck into an adjacent parking garage at one point, and got to see one of the sets from there, which is on the roof of the Randolph/Wells parking garage. They were also filming in the garage, but we couldn't see anything going on there. While sitting across the street, I saw Christopher Nolan (the director) walk by, and a number of people in bat-suits. We couldn't say for sure which one was Christian Bale, but at one point, we're pretty sure he was looking out of the garage. He looked right at us, so we waved, and he gave a little wave back. Later, we were talking to this guy who apparently hangs around the set all the time, and he said Cillian was there earlier (he had a picture on his BlackBerry to prove it), but that he was gone already because he didn't have anything to film that night. This, however, was wrong.

A matter of minutes later, from across the street, I saw Cillian walk from the set to a parking lot of trailers. He was in a suit, and his hair was in definite Crane mode (think "The Bat-man" scene). I eventually gained the nerve to call out his name, and just when I thought I was going to get a wave back, he raised his arm and ... smoothed his hair back. But I think he heard me. A few minutes later, he walked back to the set again and went up in the elevator. This was all around midnight, and we had to leave a little after that. Tonight, my cousin and I are planning on heading back, so hopefully I'll have more to report...

Liz did return the next night (23 June) and sent us this report this morning:

...Okay, well my cousin and I officially spent all night at the set, sitting in an adjacent parking garage (with a great view this time!) and across the street for a bit. No Cillian. Of what we saw, most of it was stunt work, so I'm pretty sure none of the actors were around for very long.

A quartet of affiliates

We've just added four new affiliate sites: Kirsten-Dunst.org, BryceFan.com, Hayden-Panettiere.com/, and Julia Stiles Online. Nice to meet you!

Thanks to Liz for her first-person account, to all The SuperHero Hype! spies who shared their photos, and to Mistress Kizuna for the SHH news tips!

I posted a video I took on You Tube, so I thought I may as well link it here. Cillian isn't in it, but it is semi Cillian-related, as we think the character meant to be in the van is Scarecrow. Enjoy:

There was one fan on set who said on SHH that Cillian had a huge bruise on his face... taser?

Hahahaha! Ah, Punctuator, I like the way you think!

After seeing photos of the Joker, I reckon there'll be plenty of scars in The Dark Knight. I'm glad Crane was spared.

Or maybe he wasn't, and he had his internal filters put in at the same time as the plastic surgery ...

Wow--! Just wondering if, just maybe, if he's still in the U.S., he'll hop over to L.A. for the "Sunshine" premiere on July 1-- 'cause that's where I'm gonna be...! (Fingers crossed fingers crossed fingers crossed....)

Re: the set photos: Nice to see they didn't go with a "scar makeup" route for Crane. Had that debate in a fic on another board: he got tasered in the face at the end of "Batman Begins," so would he be showing burn scars...? Glad he's not! (But here's a weird thought: if I were him, and I were playing with toxic gases, I might go in for internal filtering. Say, a permanent filter in my nasal cavities. Just so the next time the guy in the armored rubber suit who's six times my size tears off my mask and zaps me with my own neurotoxin, IT HAS NO EFFECT. [Okay: so I've read too many comics. Sue me!])

But-- crossing those fingers...!

Well it's great that he's in a sequel to Batman. I wish they'd make a sequel to Red Eye; that'd be pretty interesting.

Welcome, Beachfan! Glad you've found our site! Are you asking about the picture from the Opening Night after party? That's Sonia Friedman, the producer of Love Song.

Liz, I think you did a great job -- and you get extra points for stamina, going back like you did last last night. You'll have so much fun when the movie comes out and you see those scenes on screen!

Nice to know we'll see him in The Darkest Knight. Was looking at some of the gallery pics. Who is the girl in Love Song pic with Cillian and Nev? Is that Cillian's wife? I just found this site and I love it!!!

Oh yeah, and it turns out that kid I met who had the picture with Cillian was The Darkest Knight from SHH. We had seen him earlier--we should have just hung out with him all night and maybe we could have gotten closer!

Hahaha. Sorry I meant I was worried about how excited I am over him in The Dark Knight.
Yeah I gotta wonder about Telepathy. Personally I don't think it'll happen but who knows how the tables will turn.

MR, since he's not on the official bill, he'll probably be done with "The Dark Knight" quickly.

But yeah, he is keeping busy -- will he be shooting "Hippie Hippie Shake" AND "Telepathy" this autumn? I wonder.
