Atten-shun! First photographs of Cillian as Captain Killick

In The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain, a Welsh village is depopulated when its men go off to fight in the second World War. One red-headed man, unsuited for war, stays behind ... prompting some awkward silences about the proliferation of ginger-haired babies.

The rivalry between those who fought and those who stayed behind had deep roots. As Melty_Girl blogged last week, revenge against Dylan Thomas for missing out on fighting might have been as much to blame as possible marital infidelity for Captain William Killick's breakdown.

For his part, Killick served behind enemy lines in Greece with the Special Operation Executive, an effort that the BBC notes had one of the most dangerous tasks of the war effort:

Devised to encourage and organise resistance in occupied countries, Britain's Special Operation Executive (SOE) carried out some of the war's most hazardous work. The consequences of failure and capture were invariably torture and death.

Although decorated for his service, Killick was notably imbalanced when he returned—a fact that played no small part in the Thomases' reluctance to prosecute his attack.

Today we have the first pictures of Cillian dressed in the uniform of Captain Killick as he would have looked while serving in the SOE. Not sure if Cillian's trademark sunglasses are part of the costume, but the severe hair and crisp army jacket definitely look the part. There's something about a man in uniform...

It just strikes me as a little ironic (if that's the word: I can never remember) seeing him in a British military uniform following "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." Not that he doesn't look DAMN fine--! (I love WWII-era films: I'm gonna be on this one like white on rice.)

Also-- 'cause I didn't know quite where to comment: that picture of him in the window holding the baby and reaching for the geranium or whatever it is (flowers: another area of zero knowledge in this black & tiny mind): I LOVE THAT PICTURE. It's like the world's sweetest, sexiest, saddest greeting card. "Missing you," yeah...?

I have to confess, I have always had a reluctance about men in military uniforms. I'm just excited to see Cillian in yet another guise -- it gets me all aflutter about this new character and what he's going to do with it. Once it again, it's going to be hard to wait for his latest film to come out.

But yes, Cillian does look hot here! He usually does...

You're welcome! I'm hoping we can track down a few more shots soon. I seem to have somehow developed a curious uniform fetish...
