Sunshine videos and reviews + new photoshoot + back to Batman with a "new" video

More Sunshine video interviews

MyMovies.net's Sunshine page has quite a few new video features, including exclusive interviews with Danny Boyle and Cillian. (Poor man clearly did a non-stop day of press, since he's wearing the same clothes as in at least three other clips I've seen.) In this one, he speaks of the scientists he trained with as "modern day explorers, pushing the envelope of knowledge" before admitting that he defers to the film's science advisor Dr. Cox for all technical questions.

BBC.co.uk also has a short interview with Boyle, Benedict Wong, and Cillian.

Shedding light on Sunshine

Cillian Murphy as Capa

With Sunshine's release in much of the world today, reviews are starting to stream in. It's being commended for its high concept, visual magnificence, and fine performances, which makes the general confusion over the final act all the more disappointing. Here are a few of the first reviews:

Wendy Ide of TimesOnline writes that while Sunshine ultimately falls short of being a masterpiece, "its eerie beauty and ambitious scale ... can match anything that Hollywood has churned out." She makes special note of Cillian's performance, saying:

Cillian Murphy plays Capa, the physicist who designed the bomb. Murphy has matured into his striking looks—his icy blue gaze dominates a bone structure that, until recently, looked as if it had a few too many angles, an origami interpretation of a face. In Sunshine however, Murphy’s beauty is undeniable. He has the white-hot intensity of a young Peter O’Toole.

Others aren't so convinced. James Carroll from The Epoch Times questions whether such a hot team of scientists could actually exist:

You may also need that disbelief to accept that a team of uber-intelligent science geeks could be so young and good looking ... Well cast for their parts? Yes. Scientists? I don't think so.

Nonetheless, he calls Sunshine "a welcome addition to the sci-fi space movie canon."

Reporters are of course noting the nods to previous sci-fi classics. Saying that Boyle adopts the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach, Justin Matlock writes:

Rather than coming up with any new ideas, Boyle and writing partner Alex Garland (The Beach) have cherry picked the best sci-fi concepts from movies like 2001, Solaris, and Event Horizon and repackaged them into a beautiful-looking adventure that asks a few big questions.

Reuters' Kirk Honeycutt, who calls Sunshine "a terrific space adventure," disagrees:

The temptation is strong to compare this film, written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, to previous space epics. But Sunshine is its own creature, taking inspiration from classic science fiction films but insisting on a gritty reality that much improves on past space adventures.

And with a strong recommendation, Jack Foley of IndieLondon says:

And visually it cannot be faulted, making a mockery of its modest production costs and proving that less can sometimes be more. The film looks stunning, mixing moments of beauty and savagery with effortless aplomb. The end result is a truly special experience that confirms Boyle as one of the British film industry's shining lights. Audiences should go and be dazzled by its brilliance.

New mystery photoshoot

I just added some small pictures from a new photoshoot. Hopefully we can replace these with larger images soon, and find out more details of the photographer and date. They're such lovely pictures, it's a shame to have them so small!

Back to Batman

Huge thanks to Kerry who just alerted us about a Batman Begins interview. Recorded in June 2005, it's still a new one to me, with Cillian going into a little background about Dr. Crane and the intelligence of Chris Nolan's version of Batman. Take a look!

Thanks to Kerry for the link to the Batman interview!

I agree, Bonnie. Cillian always seems so engaged in his video and audio interviews -- which is nice to see/hear. Reading the press interviews sometimes comes across as a bit rote, especially when they ask him the same questions over and over. I know I'd tire of it! But he does manage to sound fresh when it's coming straight out of his mouth.

As for in person, I had the good fortune to see him in Love Song. He was very unassuming, and of course the beard concealed his facial structure -- he honestly could be someone you'd pass on the street, except for his eyes that just glow. I don't blame Ms. Ides for gushing.

Cillian does seem to have had a great time making Sunshine. You can definitely see his enthusiasm for the film in the various interviews with both his facial expressions and his hand gestures.

Cillian's Many Interviews& Critic's Beauty Comment
Reply #1 on : Thu April 05, 2007, 15:43:09
Hi Lilith,
On the many interviews:
The thought has also crossed my mind many times as I watch the interviews our favorite actor has to do and still seem like it's all fresh material to him. And yet he's still so polite and not arrogant. And I too have noticed the same outfits! I wonder if he'll ever wear Armani! I keep seeing the same tee shirt, jeans, jacket and sneakers uniform (sometimes sans jacket)!

On his beauty:
It was fun reading the female critic's gushing about Cillian's beauty; I wonder if he's as gorgeous in person. The Washington Post has commented on Brad Pitt's seeming so different in person, and I can tell you that having seen Hillary up close, that the camera is not her friend. Thanks for such a great site!
