Cillian and Hiroyuki Sanada in Japan
We're very grateful that Ayano, a Cillian fan from Japan, emailed us links for several Japanese websites with photos of Cillian promoting Sunshine 2057 (as it's called there) alongside Icarus II's captain, the handsome Hiroyuki Sanada. The photo with the little gold astronaut model is particularly amusing, so check 'em out on our new gallery page.
One film a year
Today's Belfast Telegraph has a feature on Cillian, and though much of the interview's information will be familiar to Cillian obsessives who are following the current spate of Sunshine-related press, the specificity of this comment stuck out for me:
"My aim is to make one film a year and spend as much time as possible with my family, just hanging out."
I could be wrong, but I don't remember hearing him cite a specific number of movies per year before. The interview also has some interesting stuff about Cillian's feelings about his homeland and adopted city, and he also notes that
"I really had to try hard to play this physicist, considering I dropped all the sciences at school, it was a bit of a challenge to say the least."
U.K. Sunshine reviews
A trio of reviews came out today, in The Mirror, The Scotsman, and The People—the latter has what's either a homophobic or a subtly sexist remark, I'm not sure which:
Our last hope is the eight people on the Icarus II (the two most famous being Michelle Yeoh—who's fit—and Cillian Murphy—who's fit if you're a woman or gay).
The Scotsman's Allan Hunter gives Sunshine four stars, commenting,
Sunshine is distinguished by what we don't see. There are no scenes of mission control back home on planet earth. There are no moments at key landmarks on Earth as people await news of the mission and whether it is successful. It creates its own claustrophobic world and stays within it.
But ultimately, Hunter says that the film ends up being too conventional. The Sunday Mirror's Mark Adams shares this opinion too, and rates the film only three stars, saying,
While the first half is tense and stylish, the finale feels forced and confusing. Which is a shame, because for most of the time Sunshine offers well-paced and watchable action and terrific special effects.
Many thanks to Ayano for steering us to the Japan pics!
