Garland's Sunshine character backstories

Lone wolf Capa
Over at the meaty Sunshine blog, Gia's given us more fascinating material to chew on: character backstories. Written by Sunshine screenwriter Alex Garland, these character synopses were provided to the cast and crew ahead of time so as to deepen the filmmaking process. Here's a Capa-centric taste:
Because Capa is the only member of the crew who is not, by history and training, an astronaut, he is an outsider. In this respect, much of the crew see him as effectively a piece of valuable equipment, which must be transported intact to the delivery point.
Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada) feels paternalistic towards all his crew, but in particular, Capa. This is partly because Capa is the youngest, but also because Capa is the only crew member who is not a career astronaut. He ... goes out of his way to make Capa feel included. What Kaneda doesn’t fully realise is that Capa is by nature a loner. He is perfectly content with his own company, working in the dark interior of the Stellar Bomb.
Searle (Cliff Curtis) does realise this—in fact, it is Capa’s self-contained quality that Searle likes. And Capa likes Searle equally. The two of them get on: they talk the same language, and have a similar sense of humour. Although they are both fundamentally loners, the relationship between them is actually the strongest bond in the crew.
Mace (Chris Evans) ... has an innate belief in the chain of command, and an innate distrust of those—such as Capa—who sit outside the chain of command. He doesn’t like Capa, but he immediately xxxxspoilerxxxx, because he knows Capa is more central to the mission’s success. His mind is clear, and is not cluttered by the confusions of adrenaline or passion. Losing his temper with Capa is the exception; not the rule.
I haven't seen any yet, but given the characters' hostility and cute quotient, I expect that Capa/Mace slashing may have already begun—right, fangirls? Ahem, changing the topic... Go check out all the backstories over at SunshineDNA.com.
