BFI Southbank Q&A with Cillian and Boyle after Sunshine screening + new affiliate

As I reported in our very first news post, the British Film Institute was holding a preview screening of Sunshine with an onstage Q&A session featuring Danny Boyle with Cillian.

The Guardian's put up the transcript of Nigel Floyd's interview with the director and star. Mind the spoilers, as the audience asks questions about things they just saw onscreen.

Lots of fascinating stuff from the garrulous Boyle, such as how they tried to build in a romance between Cillian's and Rose Byrne's characters, but romance just doesn't feel right in space movies, "even though the studio is desperate for it."

When asked by Floyd how he worked with Danny to convey Capa's internal process as a character who's "living ... in [his] head," and Cillian expanded on the arrogance of scientists theme:

"The idea that grabbed me [about Sunshine], apart from the thought of working with Danny again, was of trying to play a character who spends quite a lot of the movie being quite quiet. For about a third of the film, he's almost non-verbal. A lot of the characters I've played have been very much on the front foot and a bit combustible. This guy is certainly not that. So, you have to do it from the inside out. We spent a lot of time talking about that—I mean, these people are geniuses. They are at the peak of their professions, they are the most brilliant at their jobs, and that does something to the way that you interact with people, your perception of the world. Particularly with someone who's a physicist, you're already dealing with the most profound questions all the time: you're thinking how we got here, why we're here, and where the hell we're going. Also particularly with Capa, because he's got responsibility for the bomb. We talked about a certain thing, not quite arrogance but something that people who are that brilliant and who think about these things a lot, it does change the way you look at things.

He also explained why he wasn't in 28 Weeks Later...:

You probably know why I wasn't in the sequel also—I think it's better to reinvent. If you're going to make a sequel to a movie, it's better to give whole new characters. So I was doing this, and also I'd had enough of being chased by zombies, to be honest—I'd done my time.

Another new affiliate

Happy to report that we've picked up another affiliate: the new fansite, Christian Bale Fan.

Thanks to NancyKerrigan at LiveJournal's Cillian_Daily for the news tip!

Kerry, news on Cillian is clearly an obsession for us!

We see one of the main strengths of our site as gathering all the news so that fans who don't have time to chase it all down don't have to. Thanks for reading!

I'm gonna wait and read the reviews of "28 Weeks Later..." before deciding whether to see it. I'm a little bit dubious.
