Detectives World Premiere
Finally, some good news about this long-awaited release! New York's Tribeca Film Festival will host the world premiere of Watching the Detectives.
TFF's two-week program features "Discovery," "Showcase," and "Family" films. Paul Soter's directoral debut will be featured in the "Discovery" section, which "highlights the work of up-and-coming narrative and documentary directors." Lucy Liu gets a special mention in their press release, along with other star-studded names like Elijah Wood and Anna Paquin, so it sounds like they're making efforts to promote the film.
The sixth annual TFF runs from 25 April–6 May; check their website for ticket info.
One place we won't see Cillian...
...is playing a busker on Dublin's Grafton Street. Director John Carney (On the Edge, Zonad) has long said he wrote Once with Cillian in mind, but told ComingSoon.net that after hearing the music created for it by Glen Hansard, both he and Cillian agreed it would be hard for anyone else to play the role.
Hansard, who previously appeared as Outspan in the film version of Roddy Doyle's The Commitments, is the long-time lead vocalist of The Frames; Carney played bass for the band in the early '90s. Cillian himself is a long-time admirer of The Frames. Their songs were featured in both Disco Pigs and On the Edge, and in his 2004 interview with Dave Fanning, he said, "I think Glen Hansard is one of the best lyricists and singers around."
While I'm extremely disappointed that we won't get to hear Cillian show off his own musical talents, I am looking forward to Once. It promises to be a wonderful film, winning the World Audience Award at the most recent Sundance Film Festival.
