Box office success for Barley, Toronto Internat'l Film Fest booking

[Note: This was originally published by cillianONLINE, which has been inactive since September 2006.]

Great news for The Wind That Shakes the Barley at the box office: it was the fifth most popular film in Ireland and the UK in its first week of release. This is particularly significant because, as the BBC News noted,

...it was shown on only 105 screens in the UK and Ireland. The rest of the top four films could each be seen in at least three times as many screens.

This probably reflects high attendance in Ireland, since there aren't nearly as many cinemas showing the film in the UK. I'm not sure that the popularity of an Irish story in Ireland is going to improve the chances for distribution abroad, particularly in the US, but this Californian can still hope.

>>> U P D A T E >>> : The UK/Ireland #5 slot was cemented by Irish filmgoers. Irish Film and Television Network News reports that Barley was the #1 film in the Republic and #3 in Northern Ireland.

But Barley is finally poised to step into North America: it will make its continental premiere at Canada's prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. The festival's press release announced that Barley will be presented as part of the Masters section: "new works by some of cinema's most accomplished filmmakers."

Thanks to Jackie for the update!
