Irish web portal Unison.ie has a pair of Cillian-related articles today. The first has co-star Pádraic Delaney paying Cillian a compliment: And even though the coveted prize will likely propel Cillian into the Hollywood A-list, Pádraic believed it would take more than an award to turn the talented actor's head. He said despite a list of credits, the star remained as modest as ever.
We also get a little more of Cillian on the political nature of Barley: "The film is not dogmatic. All films should be entertaining, as well as make you sit up and think a little."
The second piece is a thought-provoking look at how the Cannes win has touched off "yet another ownership tug-of-war between Britain and Ireland" over Barley, which is particularly interesting given the film's subject matter. Is the film Irish or British? Have you ever seen Cillian described as a British actor?
Also, it looks like left-leaning publications are going to start weighing in on socialist Loach's achievement. Fascinatingly, Counterpunch comments that,
The greatness of this tale of the Irish War of Independence and ensuing Civil War has little to do with parallels to the present day... [The movie treats] its immediate subject matter with unstinting care and integrity, and for two hours the audience is nowhere except Cork, 1920-22.
Dublin writer Harry Browne goes on to proclaim, "Loach's Cork-born star, Cillian Murphy, emerges quietly but definitively as the finest screen actor Ireland has ever produced."
