Breaking news on Barley + Sunshine release dates

[Note: This was originally published by cillianONLINE, which has been inactive since September 2006.]

Fear not, North American fans: maverick filmmaker Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes The Barley will be coming soon to a theater near you. Many of us have fretted at the absence of a North American release date, even as the UK gets Barley on June 23rd and the Cannes Film Festival starts in a week. I emailed Pathè Pictures about this, and they were kind enough to shed some light on the situation:

The film will be screened to American buyers for the first time in Cannes and details of the North American distributor will be announced shortly after Cannes.

Mystery solved. Now for the bad news: official Sunshine blogger Gia, of sunshinedna.com, reports that the release date for the new Danny Boyle/Alex Garland film is no longer October 13th. In fact, it's no longer coming out this year. A short delay would have pushed them into Oscars season, so they decided to wait until that's over. Therefore, the movie will come out on March 16, 2007.

So I guess images of the Irish Civil War will have to keep us happy through the winter. Sectarian bloodshed is always happy-making, no? I jest. And I don't know about you, but I am pretty breathless to see The Wind That Shakes The Barley.
