The family's fortunes appear to take a turn for the better when a handsome stranger, Mr. Bentham (Declan Conlan), arrives with news of an inheritance. Their joy is short-lived as they learn that not only will there be no inheritance, but that Mr. Bentham has fled to England leaving Mary pregnant with his child.
