Synopsis:

Angst and desire play palpable roles as they bring the story of the creation of Vermeer's most famous painting to life. Dutiful maid Griet (Scarlett Johansson) is sent to work in the Vermeer household, where money is tight and tension runs high. Her perceptive nature and untrained yet expert eye bring her to the attention of the master painter (Colin Firth), to the ire of his jealous wife (Essie Davis). Griet struggles to balance her role as Vermeer's assistant and muse with her household duties and a romance with the attentive and charming Pieter (Cillian Murphy), a butcher whom she knows is a more appropriate match for her. When a wealthy, lascivious patron (Tom Wilkinson) insists on commissioning a painting of Griet, strain builds to a breaking point as hidden longings are brought roiling to the surface.

Cast also includes Judy Parfitt and Joanna Scanlan.
