Synopsis:
A tentative, emerging love between Ada (Nicole Kidman), a genteel preacher's daughter, and Inman (Jude Law), a rural farmer, is put to the test when he joins the rebel army and leaves to fight in the American Civil War. Left alone to struggle when their North Carolina town disintegrates and then her kind father (Donald Sutherland) dies, Ada is threatened with starvation and a menacing opportunist (Ray Winstone) who has taken over as the interim law in Cold Mountain. Her dream that Inman will one day return is all that sustains her until she finds help in the form of Ruby (Renee Zellweger), a quick-witted and practical drifter who reinvigorates both the farm and Ada's spirit. Meanwhile, Inman begins his odyssey home after an injury, crossing paths with a number of characters with wartime agendas of their own, including Bardolph, a starving Union soldier making his way north (Cillian Murphy, in one short sequence). Over four years, their story of longing, survival, and faith is told against a backdrop of the most bitter and difficult period of United States history.
Cast also includes: Eileen Atkins, Brendan Gleeson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Kathy Baker, Charlie Hunnam, Jack White, and Ethan Suplee.
